Are hedgehogs good pets for children?
Hedgehogs make very good, friendly pets. However, I would not advise them as pets for children under 14 as they are quite prickly and need to be handled properly and not dropped.
Do hedgehogs smell?
Hedgehogs themselves are very clean animals and have no actual body odour. Their cages will become smelly if not cleaned out regularly enough.
Do hedgehogs make a lot of noise?
Hedgehogs do make a variety of strange little squeaks and grunts but they are not loud and will not disturb you. Hedgehogs like to run in their wheels at night and these can be noisy unless you buy a silent one.
Will my hedgehog get along ok with my other pets?
Hedgehogs should not be allowed to come into contact with any of your other pets as they may get hurt. Also there is the risk of cross-infection between different types of animals.
Can I keep 2 or more hedgehogs together?
In the wild hedgehogs are solitary animals that only come together to breed so
as such do not get along well with company. Some females have been known to get
along together ok but never keep 2 males together as they will fight. Opposite
sex couples will mate resulting in offspring and possibly the death of the female
(unless you are a breeder and know what to do).
How long will my hedgehog live?
On average hedgehogs live 4-6 years but can live to the ripe old age of 8 years.
Will my usual vet be able to take care of my hedgehog?
Most vets will say that they can treat hedgehogs but you need to be careful as they may not be aware of 'safe' drugs to use with African hedgehogs- if in doubt feel free to email me for advice. |
